HONEY, child, honey, child, whither are you going?
Would you cast your jewels all to the breezes blowing?
Would you leave the mother who on golden grain has fed you?
Would you grieve the lover who is riding forth to wed you?

Mother mine, to the wild forest I am going,
Where upon the champ boughs the Champa buds are blowing;
To the Koil-haunted river-isles where lotus lilies glisten,
The voices of the fairy folk are calling me: O listen!

Of bridal-songs and cradle-songs and sandal-scented leisure.
Your bridal robes are in the loom, silver and saffron glowing,

The bridal-songs and cradle-songs have cadences of sorrow,
The laughter of the sud today, the wind of death tomorrow
Far sweeter sound the forest-notes where forest-streams are falling;

The Village Song Central Idea
The theme of the poem is a comparison between the world of Human beings that abounds in material pleasures and the world of Nature that is contrary to it. The Mother represents the material world. She recounts some of the features of this human’s material world like jewellery, marriage bridal songs, cradle songs sandal-scented leisure. It implies marriage, births of children and honeymoon. The Daughter represents the world of Nature. The blossoming of champa, the islands in the river resounding with cuckoo’s cooing, gurgling of streams attract her. She knows that laughter and all the songs will end in sorrows.
Hindi Translation – कविता का मुख्य विषय मानव संसार जो भौतिक आनन्दों से पूर्ण है तथा प्रकृति का संसार, जो इसके विपरीत है, के मध्य अन्तर है। माँ भौतिक संसार का प्रतिनिधित्व करती है। वह मानव के भौतिक संसार की कतिपय विशेषताओं, जैसे आभूषण, विवाह, विवाह के समय गाये जाने वाले गीतों, शिशु को सुलाने के लिए गाई गई लोरियों, मधुरमिलन के क्षणों को गिनाती है। (UPBoardSolutions.com) इसका तात्पर्य विवाह, शिशुओं के जन्म व मधुरमिलन के क्षणों से है। पुत्री प्रकृति के संसार का प्रतिनिधित्व करती है। चम्पा का पुष्पित होना, नदी में स्थित कोयल की कूक से गॅजना। टापू-झरनों का कल-कल स्वर उसे आकृष्ट करते हैं। उसे यह विदित है कि हास्य व समस्त गीत दु:ख में समाप्त होते हैं।
