Permutation groups
Definition of Permutation Groups
A permutation of a set is a rearrangement of its elements. The collection of all permutations of a finite set forms a group under the operation of composition. This group is called the symmetric group.
Even and Odd Permutations
Permutations can be classified as even or odd based on the number of transpositions (two-element swaps) required to express them. An even permutation can be expressed as a product of an even number of transpositions, while an odd permutation requires an odd number.
The Alternating Group
The alternating group, denoted as A_n, is the group of all even permutations of n elements. It is a normal subgroup of the symmetric group S_n and has an index of 2.
Cayley's Theorem
Cayley's theorem states that every group G is isomorphic to a subgroup of the symmetric group acting on G. This provides a concrete way to represent abstract groups as permutation groups.
Direct Products
The direct product of two groups is a group formed by taking the Cartesian product of the sets of the two groups, with the group operation defined component-wise. This allows for the construction of new groups from known groups.

Normal Subgroups
A normal subgroup is a subgroup that is invariant under conjugation by elements of the group. This means for a subgroup N of a group G, if g is an element of G and n is an element of N, then the element gng^{-1} is also in N. Normal subgroups are important because they allow for the construction of quotient groups.
Quotient Groups
A quotient group is formed by partitioning a group G by a normal subgroup N. The set of cosets of N in G, denoted G/N, forms a group under the operation defined by (aN)(bN) = (ab)N. Quotient groups simplify many problems in group theory and help in understanding the structure of groups.
Homomorphisms and Isomorphisms
A homomorphism is a function between two groups that preserves the group operation. If there exists a homomorphism from group G to group H that is also a bijection, then G and H are said to be isomorphic. Isomorphic groups have the same algebraic structure, and they are essentially different representations of the same group.
Fundamental Theorem of Homomorphism
The Fundamental Theorem of Homomorphisms states that if there is a homomorphism from a group G to a group H, the image of G under this homomorphism is isomorphic to the quotient of G by the kernel of the homomorphism. This provides a powerful way to understand the structure of groups through their homomorphisms.
Theorems on Isomorphism

Rings
A ring is a set equipped with two binary operations: addition and multiplication. These operations satisfy certain properties including associativity, distributivity, and the existence of an additive identity. Examples include integers, polynomials, and matrices.
Subrings
A subring is a subset of a ring that is itself a ring under the same operations. It must contain the additive identity and be closed under both addition and multiplication. A common example is the set of even integers as a subring of the integers.
Integral Domains
An integral domain is a commutative ring with no zero divisors and an element identity. It satisfies properties of rings but also includes that if the product of two elements is zero, at least one of the elements must be zero. An example is the set of integers.
Fields
A field is a commutative ring where every non-zero element has a multiplicative inverse. This implies the field is an integral domain as well. Common examples include rational numbers, real numbers, and complex numbers.
Characteristic of a Ring
The characteristic of a ring is the smallest positive integer n such that n multiplicatively applied to the additive identity yields zero; it can also be zero if no such integer exists. The characteristic provides information about the structure of the ring.
Ideals and Quotient Rings
An ideal is a special subset of a ring that absorbs multiplication by any element from the ring. The quotient ring is formed by partitioning a ring into equivalence classes determined by an ideal. It allows the construction of new rings from existing rings.
Ring Homomorphisms
A ring homomorphism is a function between two rings that respects the ring operations. It should preserve addition and multiplication, allowing for structure-preserving maps. This concept is crucial for relating different rings and understanding their properties.
Quotient Field of an Integral Domain
The quotient field (or field of fractions) of an integral domain allows the construction of a field from the integral domain by taking ratios of its elements. It captures the behavior of fractions and facilitates operations that are not possible within the integral domain alone.

Limit and Continuity of Functions of Two Variables
A function of two variables f(x,y) is said to have a limit L as (x,y) approaches (a,b) if for every ε>0 there exists a δ>0 such that whenever the distance between (x,y) and (a,b) is less than δ, the distance between f(x,y) and L is less than ε. Continuity at a point requires that the limit exists, equals the function value at that point, and the function is defined.
Differentiation of Functions of Two Variables
A function f(x,y) is differentiable at a point if it can be well-approximated by a linear function around that point. The partial derivatives ∂f/∂x and ∂f/∂y exist at that point. The total differential is expressed as df = ∂f/∂x dx + ∂f/∂y dy.
Necessary and Sufficient Condition for Differentiability
A function f(x,y) is differentiable at (a,b) if it is continuous at (a,b) and the limit of the difference quotient exists. This includes the existence of the partial derivatives and that they are continuous in a neighborhood of (a,b).
Schwarz's and Young's Theorem
Schwarz's theorem states that if the mixed partial derivatives of a function are continuous, then they are equal: ∂²f/∂x∂y = ∂²f/∂y∂x. Young's theorem provides bounds on mixed partial derivatives and states conditions under which equality holds.
Taylor's Theorem for Functions of Two Variables
Taylor's theorem for functions of two variables provides a way to write a function as a sum of its derivatives evaluated at a point, plus a remainder term. For a function f(x,y) modeled around (a,b): f(x,y) = f(a,b) + (x-a)(∂f/∂x(a,b)) + (y-b)(∂f/∂y(a,b)) + higher order terms.
Maxima and Minima for Functions of Two Variables
To find maxima and minima of a function of two variables, we use the first and second derivative tests. Critical points are found where the first partial derivatives vanish. The nature of these points can be determined using the second derivative test involving the Hessian matrix.
Lagrange's Multiplier Method
Lagrange's multiplier method is used to find the extrema of functions subject to constraints. The method involves introducing a multiplier λ and solving the system of equations formed by the gradients of the function and the constraint.

The Jacobian matrix is a matrix of all first-order partial derivatives of a vector-valued function. Existence Theorems
Laplace transforms exist for functions that are piecewise continuous and of exponential order. This means that for a function f(t), if there exists a constant M and a positive real number a such that |f(t)| ≤ Me^(at) for large t, then the Laplace transform F(s) = ∫_0^∞ e^(-st) f(t) dt exists.
Linearity of Laplace Transform
The Laplace transform is a linear operator. This property states that if f(t) and g(t) are two functions with respective Laplace transforms F(s) and G(s), and a and b are constants, then the Laplace transform of the linear combination is given by: L{af(t) + bg(t)} = aF(s) + bG(s).
Laplace Transform of Derivatives
The Laplace transform of the first derivative of a function is L{f'(t)} = sF(s) - f(0). For higher derivatives, the general rule is L{f^(n)(t)} = s^nF(s) - s^(n-1)f(0) - s^(n-2)f'(0) - ... - f^(n-1)(0).
Laplace Transform of Integrals
For an integral of a function, the Laplace transform is given by L{∫_0^t f(τ) dτ} = (1/s)F(s) provided F(s) is the Laplace transform of f(t).
Convolution Theorem
The convolution theorem states that the Laplace transform of the convolution of two functions equals the product of their Laplace transforms: L{f(t) * g(t)} = F(s)G(s), where * denotes convolution defined as (f*g)(t) = ∫_0^t f(τ)g(t-τ) dτ.
Inverse Laplace Transforms
The inverse Laplace transform is used to revert F(s) back to f(t). Multiple techniques to find inverse transforms include partial fraction decomposition and using tables of transforms. The relationship is given by f(t) = L^(-1){F(s)}.
Solution of Differential Equations
Laplace transforms can transform differential equations into algebraic equations. By taking the Laplace transform of the entire equation, solving for the transformed variable, and then taking the inverse transform, the solution of the original differential equation can be found.

Fourier Series and Transforms
Fourier Series
A Fourier series is a way to represent a periodic function as a sum of sines and cosines. The general form is f(x) = a0/2 + Σ(an cos(nx) + bn sin(nx)), where an and bn are Fourier coefficients determined by integrating the function over a period.
Fourier Expansion of Piecewise Monotonic Functions
Piecewise monotonic functions can be represented using Fourier series by calculating the coefficients for each piece separately. If the function has discontinuities, the series converges to the average of the left and right limits at those points.
Half-Range Expansions
Half-range expansions involve approximating functions that are defined on a semi-infinite interval. There are two types: half-range sine series and half-range cosine series, depending on the boundary conditions imposed.
Fourier Transforms
The Fourier transform is a method of transforming a function defined in the time domain into the frequency domain. The formula is F(ω) = ∫ f(t) e^(-iωt) dt, valid for both finite and infinite intervals.
Fourier Integrals
Fourier integrals generalize Fourier series to non-periodic functions. They express a function as an integral of complex exponentials, given by the formula f(x) = (1/2π) ∫ F(ω) e^(iωx) dω, covering all frequencies.

Euler's Equation for Functionals containing First Order Derivatives

Extremals
Extremals are functions that make a functional reach its minimum or maximum value. The necessary condition for a function to be an extremal is that it satisfies Euler's equation derived from the variational problem.
Functionals dependent on Higher Order Derivatives
Functionals can also depend on higher order derivatives, leading to Euler's equation being extended to include these derivatives. The form of the equation changes, and additional terms are included to account for the higher order derivatives involved.
Functionals dependent on more than One Independent Variable
When functionals depend on multiple independent variables, the variational principles apply, but Euler's equation must be modified accordingly. The resulting set of equations are partial differential equations rather than ordinary differential equations.
