Automorphisms

Conjugacy Classes

The Class Equation

p-groups
A p-group is a group in which the order of every element is a power of a prime p. One important property is that nontrivial p-groups have nontrivial centers. The classification of their structure is central to group theory.
Sylow's Theorems
Sylow's theorems provide conditions for the existence and number of subgroups of particular orders in a finite group. The first theorem guarantees the existence of Sylow p-subgroups, the second relates to their conjugacy, and the third relates to the normality of these subgroups.

Finite Simple Groups

Generalized Cayley's Theorem
This theorem states that every group is isomorphic to a subgroup of the symmetric group acting on the group. This effectively shows any group can be represented as permutations.
Index Theorem
The index theorem states that if H is a subgroup of G, then the index |G : H| is the number of left cosets of H in G. This is crucial for understanding the structure of a group in terms of its subgroups.

Polynomial rings over commutative rings
Definition and Structure
A polynomial ring over a commutative ring R is a set of expressions formed by the elements of R and indeterminates. It is denoted R[x], where x is the indeterminate. Operations of addition and multiplication are defined similarly to conventional algebra.
Division Algorithm
For polynomials f(x) and g(x) in R[x], where g(x) is not the zero polynomial, there exist unique polynomials q(x) and r(x) in R[x] such that f(x) = g(x)q(x) + r(x), where the degree of r is less than that of g.
Principal Ideal Domains (PID)
A principal ideal domain is an integral domain in which every ideal is principal, meaning it can be generated by a single element. In polynomial rings like R[x], if R is a PID, then R[x] is also a PID.
Factorization of Polynomials
Factorization involves expressing a polynomial as the product of its irreducible factors. In integral domains, each non-zero polynomial can be uniquely factored into irreducible polynomials, up to order and units.
Reducibility Tests
Tests can determine if a polynomial is reducible over a certain field or ring. Common tests include checking for roots, using properties of degrees, or applying specific theorems relevant to the base ring.
Irreducibility Tests
To prove that a polynomial is irreducible, we can use techniques such as checking divisibility, degree criteria, and special cases like Eisenstein's criterion, which provides a handy method for certain classes of polynomials.
Eisenstein's Criterion
A polynomial f(x) = a_n x^n + ... + a_1 x + a_0 with integer coefficients is irreducible in Q[x] if there exists a prime p that divides a_i for all i < n and does not divide a_n, and p^2 does not divide a_0.
Unique Factorization Domain (UFD)
A Unique Factorization Domain is an integral domain in which every non-zero element can be factored uniquely into irreducible elements, apart from order and unit factors. The ring Z[x] is a UFD, which extends the concept of unique factorization from the integers.

Integral Domains
An integral domain is a commutative ring with no zero divisors and a multiplicative identity. The concept of divisibility in integral domains extends the idea of divisibility in integers.
Irreducible Elements
An element is irreducible if it is not a unit and cannot be factored into products of other non-unit elements. Irreducible elements play a crucial role in understanding the structure of integral domains.
Prime Elements
A prime element is an irreducible element p such that if p divides the product ab, then p must divide either a or b. This property ensures that primes serve as the building blocks for the integers and more generally in integral domains.
Unique Factorization Domains (UFD)
A UFD is an integral domain where every element can be factored uniquely into irreducible elements, up to order and units. This uniqueness property is crucial for many areas of algebra.
Euclidean Domains (ED)
An ED is a type of integral domain that allows a division algorithm. In EDs, given any two elements a and b (with b not zero), there exist q and r such that a = bq + r, where r is either zero or has a lower degree than b.
Relation between UFD, PID, and ED
Every Euclidean domain is a unique factorization domain, and every unique factorization domain is a principal ideal domain (PID). However, there are PIDs that are not UFDs, demonstrating that while these concepts are related, they are not equivalent.

Vector Spaces

Vectors are linearly independent if no vector in the set can be expressed as a linear combination of the others. If such a relationship exists, the vectors are linearly dependent. Linear independence is crucial for determining the basis of a vector space.
Basis and Dimension
A basis of a vector space is a set of linearly independent vectors that span the space. The dimension of a vector space is the number of vectors in its basis, indicating the number of degrees of freedom in the space.
Quotient Space
A quotient space is formed by partitioning a vector space into disjoint subsets known as cosets. It allows for the examination of the structure of a vector space by analyzing the properties of these cosets and their behavior under linear transformations.

Definition of Linear Transformations
A linear transformation is a function between vector spaces that preserves the operations of vector addition and scalar multiplication. It can be defined mathematically as T: V -> W, satisfying T(u + v) = T(u) + T(v) and T(cu) = cT(u) for vectors u, v in V and scalar c.
Algebra of Linear Transformations
The algebra of linear transformations includes operations such as addition, scalar multiplication, and composition of transformations. If T1 and T2 are linear transformations, then T1 + T2 is also a linear transformation, where (T1 + T2)(v) = T1(v) + T2(v). Similarly, if c is a scalar, then cT(v) = cT(v) preserves linearity.
Rank and Nullity of Linear Transformations
The rank of a linear transformation T is the dimension of its image, while the nullity is the dimension of its kernel. The image is the set of output vectors, and the kernel is the set of vectors in the domain that map to the zero vector in the codomain.
Rank-Nullity Theorem
The rank-nullity theorem states that for a linear transformation T: V -> W from a finite-dimensional vector space V to a vector space W, the sum of the rank and nullity of T equals the dimension of V: rank(T) + nullity(T) = dim(V).
Representation of Linear Transformations as Matrices
Every linear transformation can be represented as a matrix relative to bases of the domain and codomain. If V has basis {v1, v2,..., vn} and W has basis {w1, w2,..., wm}, the transformation T can be represented by a matrix A, where A_ij = T(vi) in terms of the basis of W.
Effect of Change of Bases

The dual space of a vector space V, denoted V*, consists of all linear functionals on V. If V is finite-dimensional with dimension n, the dimension of the dual space V* is also n. The dual space plays a crucial role in many areas of mathematics, including differential geometry and the theory of distributions.
Characteristic Values of Linear Transformations
Characteristic values, or eigenvalues, of a linear transformation T: V -> V are scalars λ such that there exists a non-zero vector v in V satisfying T(v) = λv. The characteristic polynomial p(λ) is defined as the determinant of (T - λI), where I is the identity transformation. The roots of this polynomial, which are the eigenvalues, provide important insights into the properties of the transformation, such as stability and oscillatory behavior.
Cayley-Hamilton Theorem
The Cayley-Hamilton theorem states that every square matrix A satisfies its own characteristic polynomial p(λ). That is, if p(λ) = det(A - λI), then substituting A into this polynomial yields the zero matrix, p(A) = 0. This theorem is fundamental in linear algebra as it provides a way to derive matrix functions, such as exponentials and inverses, and is used in solving systems of differential equations and in control theory.
