The Psalm Of Life Central Idea
The central idea of the poem “The Psalm Of Life” is given below.
The poet says that life is real. It is not an empty dream. It does not mean mere enjoyment or sorrow. It is full of struggles and difficulties. The poet advises young men to meet life and its difficulties with courage and enthusiasm. They should be patient and hard-working. They should not care for any remuneration. They have to achieve a noble idea of life.
Hindi Translation – (कवि कहता है कि जीवन वास्तविक है | यह थोथा स्वपन ही नहीं है | इसका उद्देश्य केवल आनंद और दुःख ही नहीं हैं | यह संघर्ष और कठिनाइयों से भरा हुआ है | कवि नवयुवकों को जीवन और उसकी कठिनाइयों का सामना साहस और उत्साह से करने का परामर्श देता है | उनको धैर्यवान तथा परिश्रमी होना चाहिए | उनको किसी पारिश्रमिक की चिंता नहीं करनी चाहिए | उन्हें जीवन का एक उच्च आदर्श प्राप्त करना है |)

Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal.
“Dust thou art, to dust returnest,”
Is not spoken of the soul.
Hindi Translation – मुझे दुखभरी कविताओं में यह न कहो कि जीवन केवल एक थोथा स्वपन है क्योंकि आराम से सोने वाली आत्मा मृत होने के समान है, अन्य चीजें वैसी नहीं हैं जैसी कि वे दिखती हैं |
जीवन वास्तविक है | जीवन गंभीर है, अर्थात जीवन का उद्देश्य जीवन के आनंदों का उपभोग करना और मृत्यु को प्राप्त होना ही नहीं है |
तुम्हारा शरीर मिट्टी का बना हुआ है और मिट्टी में ही मिल जाएगा, किन्तु यह बात आत्मा के लिए नहीं कही गई है, अर्थात आत्मा अमर है |

Is our destined end or way;

Hindi Tranalation – जीवन का यह पूर्व निर्धारित लक्ष्य या उद्देश्य नहीं है की हम आनंद उठाएं और कष्ट सहन करें तथा मर जाए |
जीवन का उद्देश्य सतत परिश्रम करते रहना है | हमें सतत प्रगति करते रहना चाहिए |
ज्ञान का क्षेत्र अनंत है, लेकिन समय तेजी से व्यतीत होता जा रहा है | हम मजबूत और टिकाऊ व्यक्तित्व के धनी मानव हैं |
इसके बावजूद हम उस ढोल की धीमी आवाज के समान, जिसको कपडे में लपेटा गया है, कदमताल करते हुए मृत्यु का वरन करने के लिए धीरे-धीरे बढ़ते जा रहे हैं |

In the bivouac of life.
Be not like dumb, driven cattle;
Be a hero in the strife!
Hindi Translation – जीवन अस्थायी तथा क्षणिक है | जीवन संघर्षों तथा कठिनाइयों से भरा पड़ा है | अत: इसे इससे पीछे नहीं हटना चाहिए, परन्तु जीवनरूपी युद्ध में अपने कर्तव्य का निर्वाह करना चाहिए | मनुष्य को संसार में गूंगे तथा हांके जाने वाले पशुओं की भांति नहीं रहना चाहिए और उसे अपनी परिस्थितियों से विचलित नहीं होना चाहिए |
जीवन और उसकी कठिनाइयों का सामना साहस तथा उत्साह से करना चाहिए |
भविष्य कितना ही सुनहरा क्यों न हो उसप र विश्वास मत करो तथा बीते हुए समय को दफ़न हो जाने दो | उसकी स्मृतियाँ शेष मत रखो | कर्म करो वर्तमान में कर्म करो | अ[अपने मन के अन्दर विश्वास रखो तथा उपर शून्य में ईश्वर पर यकीन करो |

Hindi Tranalation – महापुरुषों का जीवन हमें उत्साहित करता है कि हम भी उनका अनुसरण करते हुए स्वयं को दिव्य पथ का अनुगामी बनाएं | ऐसा करके हम मृत्यु के पश्चात् लोगों के लिए प्रेरणा बन जाएंगे और युगों-युगों तक याद किए जाएंगे |
हमारे पद-चिकृत संभवत: हमारे पश्चात् जीवन नैया को खेते-खेते निराश हो चुके हमारे किसी भाई को भविष्य में आप्लावित करने तथा उत्साह से भर देने में सार्थक भूमिका निभाएंगे |
आओ हम लंगर बांधकर हर परिस्थिति का दृढ़तापूर्वक सामना करने के लिए खड़े हो जाएं | जीवन का लक्ष्य कठोर परिश्रम तथा लक्ष्य की प्राप्ति करना है |
नवयुवकों को धैर्यवान तथा घोर परिश्रमी होना चाहिए | उन्हें तात्कालिक पारिश्रमिक की चिंता नहीं करनी चाहिए |

Ans. “Dust thou art, to dust returnest” is not applicable to the soul. The soul is immortal. It neither originates from dust nor it returns to dust like our body.
(“तुम मिट्टी हो और तुम्हे मिट्टी में ही मिल जाना है” यह कथन आत्मा के लिए उपयुक्त नहीं है | आत्मा अमर है | यह हमारे शरीर की भांति न तो मिट्टी से उत्पन्न होती है और न ही मिट्टी में मिलती है)

Ans. “Not enjoyment and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way”, in these lines the poet wants to say that the purpose of our life is not only to enjoy or to be sad.
(“न ही आनंद और न ही दुःख, हमारा नियत लक्ष्य या उद्देश्य है” इन पंक्तियों में कवि कहना चाहता है की हमारे जीवन का उद्देश्य केवल आनंद मनाना या दुखी होना नहीं है )

Ans. If we make continuous progress, our lives can become better every day.
