Ans.

Q1. Differentiate among emotion, feelings and mood. Describe the types of emotions.

Ans. Difference Between Emotion, Feeling, and Mood:

Emotion, feeling, and mood are all related to our affective states, but they have distinct differences:

  • Emotion: An emotion is an intense, short-lived, and complex psycho-physiological response to a specific event or stimulus. It involves physiological changes (e.g., increased heart rate), behavioural responses (e.g., shouting), and a subjective experience. For instance, the emotion of fear arises from seeing a snake. Emotions typically last for only seconds or minutes.
  • Feeling: A feeling is the subjective or conscious experience of an emotion. It is the cognitive label we apply to the emotion. When we say, “I feel scared,” we are identifying that physiological and mental state as the feeling of ‘fear’. Feelings can be less intense than the raw emotion itself.
  • Mood: A mood is a long-lasting, less intense, and diffuse emotional state that often lacks a specific trigger or cause. It can last for hours or even days. For example, feeling “irritable” or “gloomy” for an entire day without a clear reason. Moods influence our general way of thinking and behaving.

In short, an emotion is an immediate reaction, a feeling is our subjective experience of that reaction, and a mood is a longer-term emotional backdrop.

Types of Emotions:

Psychologists have categorized emotions in various ways. According to Paul Ekman, there are six universal basic emotions found across all cultures:

  1. Happiness: A state of contentment, joy, and well-being.
  2. Sadness: A feeling of loss, disappointment, or helplessness.
  3. Fear: A response generated by the perception of a threat.
  4. Anger: An intense response to injustice, threat, or frustration.
  5. Disgust: Aversion to something unpleasant or offensive.
  6. Surprise: A brief reaction to an unexpected event.

Robert Plutchik presented the “Wheel of Emotions,” which organizes eight primary emotions into four opposing pairs: Joy-Sadness, Trust-Disgust, Fear-Anger, and Surprise-Anticipation. According to him, the combination of these primary emotions creates more complex, secondary emotions, such as Love (Joy + Trust) or Disappointment (Sadness + Surprise).
